It’s possible you were unaware that in and around the St. Louis metro area trees are monitored by each municipality and citations or tickets can be given if a tree is considered a hazard or nuisance. Each suburb monitors trees to keep its citizens safe from trees that have become dangerous due to situations like a potential for limbs to fall or the entire trees to fall on people or surrounding homes.
In the past two months, we have removed trees in Florissant, Webster Groves, Creve Coeur, Maryland Heights and Overland due to citations. These trees were all ticketed because they were dead and had become dangerous to the community streets or the surrounding homes.
Each suburb has its guidelines and ordinances so it can be a bit tricky to keep up with what a violating tree might look like and what to do if you receive a citation.
Example Tree Ordinances in St. Louis Suburbs
Below are the tree ordinance or plans that are listed online for the cities mentioned above:
Florissant – Minimum Clearances For Overhanging Trees and Shrubs Over Streets
Webster Groves – Tree Ordinance
Creve Coeur – Notice To Owner, Lessee or Occupant To Trim or Remove
Overland – Enforcement of Disposal of Dead Trees and Shrubs Violations
According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the number of these citations is currently increasing as a result of traffic revenue decreasing.
What to Do If You Are Cited
When someone, whose home is located in a suburb we service, has been ticketed by the city we have several ways we can help. Many times these citations require action within a few weeks or even days. This type of turn around is difficult to meet if you need a tree service because of the time necessary to contact a company, create an estimate both parties agree on and get a team together.
We can help in two ways here. First by providing an estimate quickly, and secondly by contacting the city on your behalf and securing an extension. These request can only happen after we have a contract as extensions are typically granted only once the homeowner has an agreement in place for the work. We’ve worked with inspectors in the suburbs such as Maryland Heights, Overland, Creve Coeur, Florissant, Chesterfield, Webster Groves, and St Louis, in the past, so our relationship with them gives us the ability to handle this for the customer efficiently.
